Creating Space for Sidebar Content

I am looking to reduce the size of the main featured image on the homepage and include more space in the sidebar. I would like to set up my website similar to http://www.runawayguide.com/ . I would also like the featured posts to be in rows of 2 going down the page similar to the runaway website as well. Any direction would be greatly appreciated. www.backpackingotc.com
