Create Post Archive Page – best method?

Hi, I need to create an archive page as my client's posts have grown. I used to just put a wordpress.com shortcode on a new page -- but I was wondering if there is a best method for creating an archive page. I would prefer not to make a separate template. is it okay to use the wp.com shortcodes w/ catch themes? thanks J
