Change background colour of menu's

Hello, I have installed the Clean Journal Wordpress theme and I understand that I can override the CSS by going to "Customizing ▸ Theme Options Custom CSS Options". I have found some CSS code online to change the menu background colour, however it did not work. Please can someone advise how I can change the background colour of the menu bar?
