Category menu with image

Hello, I am a novice, so I apologize in advance for my general verbage. I'm trying to create a clickable static set of links under the menu on my homepage. You can see where I've attempted it with the image slider. http://interiorsalvagedesign.com/ I'd like to have a basic menu and then below it have clickable categories similar to this website where you can click on the DIY category for example. http://www.addicted2decorating.com/ How can I do something like the image slider but without the sliding?
