cannot change header pattern

Hello team, I want to change our website. Amongst others I want to make another 404 page. Therefor I need the header without menu. I tried to change the 404 header in our colors, but after going to the patterns page I cannot change anything, because the patterns are locked. Maybe I do something very stupid, but can anyone help me?   Kind regards Hans Hagmeijer
