adjust width left sidebar – body text right

Hi, How can I diminish the width of the left sidebar and widen the primary area on the right. Also how can I close the white space between the left sidebar and the text area on the right. I tried css code #primary and #secondary, but not good enough I guess. Or I am looking at the wrong place.
