Adding "Latest posts" to static homepage

Hi there! I need to either add an image slider to the "latest post" homepage or find a way to show my lastest post on a static page. How do i do this? I've read on some forums that i'd have to add code on the static page's .php file but i don't know how to create/find the file. Any help would be great!
